The Leak also claims their source mentions Sony’s plan to create a new design for the PS5 that doesn’t include the stand. This way it can lay flat and level without it while tipped over onto its side. Without the stand there, it would certainly make the console slimmer from a horizontal perspective. But if Sony is truly trying to make a PS5 with a reduced size, then more of the design is probably going to have to change. As it turns out, the company may be attempting to do just that.

A PS5 Slim would come with a “significant change” to its exterior

To be clear, no leaks of the actual design have popped up yet. However, The Leak states that the design of this new model would be changed significantly on the exterior. And that to help accomplish the reduced size Sony would be using a ‘die-shrink treatment.” This would reduce the size of the semiconductor components. Of course, a die-shrink treatment alone wouldn’t make the console slimmer or smaller. But if the information is accurate, then it could be needed to reach the overall goal of a slimmer or smaller console. And let’s be honest, the PS5 could definitely do with slimming down some. It’s the biggest console Sony has ever made and it takes up a massive amount of space. Additionally, the rumor suggests that Sony will potentially start production of this new PS5 in Q2 of next year. With a launch happening sometime in Q3. That being said, a Q3 launch was also already suggested as part of the earlier report about Sony removing the disc drive. Which this rumor seems to be corroborating.
