Though Discord has been steadily adding new Connection possibilities. But with Linked Roles, Connections serve an additional purpose. And are meant to add more trust to a person’s persona on Discord by pairing it with their personas on other platforms. Linked roles will be handed out by community or server moderators. Just like any other role, users can’t set these for themselves. Unless they’re already a moderator for the server(s) they’re in.

Linked roles will be live in Discord over the next few weeks

Sometime between now and the end of the year, Discord should have linked roles pushed out to users. The company says the new function of connections will be live over the next few weeks. So there’s a good chance that many users will see the ability to set up linked roles (by way of adding connections), before the new year rolls in. If you receive a linked role, then it does more than just verify who you are. It also has the ability to open up exclusive channels access. Just like now, moderators can set up channels and then set access to require a linked role status. Alternatively they can change existing channels to require this role. On top of the linked roles, connections will now also be able to display additional details on your profile. For instance, if you link your Reddit account and then choose to display it on your profile, details like your karma count can be displayed. The same goes for linking your Twitter. This change will allow your tweet number and how many followers you have to be displayed on your profile. While this may not matter to some users, for those that use Discord as a tie-in to their social media presence, it can be a good way to show people who you are. You can read more about linked roles in Discord’s official blog post.
