This could be proof Google is developing a second-gen Google Tensor SoC
Folks over at 9to5Google managed to spot something interesting while digging through apps on the Pixel 6. They found references to a “Cloudripper”, a Pixel-related codename. This is not a codename for either the Pixel 7 or 7 Pro. The source believes this is a codename for the second-gen Google Tensor SoC, with the model number “GS201”. That same “GS201” model number was spotted by Mishaal Rahman in some newly-released Android code changes. Now, considering that this codename is already included in Pixel-related apps, chances are that Google is already working hard on developing this SoC. That is not surprising, though, not at all. Companies kick off such development long before the devices are supposed to release, and Google is expected to release a new Tensor chip every year, basically. This is, of course, no confirmation that the chip is coming nor that it will be included in the Pixel 7 series. Chances are it will, though. Google is not planning on giving up on its SoCs, as there are a lot of benefits to having them.

The Google Tensor was developed with help from Samsung, and it makes it possible for Google to utilize AI better than ever before. Having full control over the SoC gives Google a lot more possibilities than using chips from Qualcomm, for example. Apple has been doing it for years for its iPhone handsets, and that worked great for them. Google is looking to do the same. Even OPPO is allegedly working on its own processor, to be used in its flagship devices. The Google Pixel 7 series likely won’t launch until Q4 2022, as the Pixel 6 phones arrived recently. So, we’re in for quite a wait to see the second-gen Google Tensor.
