The new YouTube update gives it a white status bar

It’s painfully obvious when an app hasn’t updated its visuals— there are still some apps that have the UI elements present in Android 4.1. While YouTube isn’t quite that bad, there’s one UI element that’s been long overdue. The status bar above the app has been gray for some time. With the new YouTube app update, it’s now white, which gives it a more modern appearance. Not only that, but it changes color now. Modern apps adjust the status bar color to comply with the main color in the app.

This isn’t much, but it’s still significant

This update to the YouTube app might not be groundbreaking by any means, but it brings the company to our attention. It leaves us wondering when YouTube will update the app to match Material You. So far, it seems that Material You is pretty popular among Android 12 beta users, and it’s only a matter of time before every Google service is adorned with it. Since YouTube acts as its own entity, it’s tough to tell when the company will implement the changes. YouTube has been making tweaks to the app’s aesthetics over the past couple of months, moving buttons around and putting the “add YouTube Short” button front and center, so we know that the company has the capacity to change the UI.

Other YouTube news includes being able to download videos on your browser

YouTube Premium users have enjoyed the ability to download videos for some time now, but this was only through the app. YouTube is now experimenting with video downloads from your desktop browser. This feature will function just like the app, but with some differences. If you want to adjust the resolution, you have to go to the download settings and choose it. This is different from the app where you’re prompted to choose the resolution for each video you download. Just like with the app, your download maxes out at 1080p. If you’re interested, you can only enable this if you have YouTube Premium. Go to the YouTube new page and enable the feature. Act quickly, though; YouTube is only testing this feature until October 19th. There’s no telling it will be coming back to stay after that.
