One UI 5.0 new features and changes
To start with, One UI 5.0 brings minor changes to the notification panel. The app icons in notifications are bigger and the text appears to be bolder too. The quick settings toggles are a bit smaller, though. The background opacity has changed a little. Elsewhere, Samsung has replaced the dialog box that appears when an app requires certain permissions with the default design that Google supplies with Android 13. This could help with speedier updates as the company would have fewer things to change over stock Android. But as the new report notes, there’s also a possibility that this build on One UI 5.0 has yet to implement the custom permission dialog box. After all, Samsung is known for some heavy customization of Android. In line with that, the company is adding an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to the Gallery app. If an image contains text, you will be able to extract it and copy it to the clipboard. The device automatically detects the text and shows a button to quickly pull it out. You required Bixby Vision to do this in the past. Samsung Keyboard also gets the OCR, allowing you to grab text through the camera viewfinder and paste it on a message or email you’re typing. Samsung is adding a proprietary Security and Privacy Hub to One UI 5.0. It works similarly to Google’s version in Android 13. You can find all your accounts, passwords, and other security and privacy controls here. These features were there in One UI 4.0 too but the company is streamlining things a bit with the new version.
New gestures, Samsung Notes collaboration, and more
One UI 5.0 also brings a couple of new gestures. Available through the Labs section, you get gesture support for split-screen and pop-up views. The gestures aren’t functional in this build but Samsung could make them functional before the release of the public beta. Additionally, the Korean firm is adding collaboration support to Samsung Notes. You can write, edit, and share a note with up to 100 people. Any changes will be visible to all participants instantly. Other highlights include UWB (ultra-wideband) toggle in settings and currently active app in quick settings. Improved animations are part of the package too. As said earlier, these One UI 5.0 features and changes were spotted in an unofficial build that isn’t available to the public. Some things may change in the official build. Public beta testing of One UI 5.0 is expected to begin within the next week. We will let you know when the rollout begins.
