Right off the bat, I find the OPPO Find X5 Pro to be more appealing than the previous version. Comparing this device to last year’s Find X3 Pro you may notice that the new design is mainly iterative. In my opinion, the minor design changes that OPPO made, make the Find X5 Pro a better-looking successor than last year’s model.
OPPO Find X5 Pro unibody design is elegant and full of curves
Upon unboxing the first thing you notice is that the Find X5 Pro is chock full of curves everywhere. There isn’t one sharp corner or angle on the entire device. Consequently, the power button on the left rail and the volume switches on the right actually feel a bit jarring when you are holding the device. Speaking of rail or frame, it is polished metal in chrome and accentuates the ceramic white back perfectly! The unibody ceramic back means no separate camera module hump that we see from other device makers. I love the look of the Ceramic White back with the black logo along with the uniquely shaped camera module. This is probably one of the best white color devices I have seen since the original Panda Pixel 2 XL from about 5 years ago.
Overall the in-hand feel is absolutely stellar although the back is a bit slippery. Fear not though because OPPO includes an excellent translucent matte white case in the box. This is probably one of my favorite OEM cases and complements the device very well.
Custom chip along with Hasselblad partnership for better photography results
One could argue that last year’s Find X3 Pro camera module looked very familiar to the offerings from a certain Cupertino-based company. However, the new Find X5 Pro camera module looks very unique and I like how the back melds in on all four sides. The main camera is a 50MP Sony IMX 766 sensor with full 5-axis stabilization. The same 50MP Sony IMX 766 sensor with a different f/2.2 aperture acts as the ultrawide camera with a 110.3-degree field of view although it lacks optical image stabilization. Lastly, we get a 13MP telephoto with an f/2.4 aperture that is capable of 5x hybrid optical zoom. The unique 3MP microscope camera with ring lighting and 60X magnification is gone. I would have liked for OPPO to have either continued it or added a periscope camera in its place. A big change is OPPO has included a new custom chip – MariSilicon X for image processing. OPPO claims that this Neural Processing Unit (NPU) will allow the Find X5 Pro to take better videos at night. We will surely test this out during the full review but for now, it is exciting to see more device makers adding custom image processing chips for better photo and video results. OPPO is claiming that the partnership with Hasselblad should result in more natural and accurate colors. My initial impression is that this is the case in the few pictures that I have taken. There are more camera updates on the way before the full commercial release so I will discuss the in-depth results in the full review.
Flagship grade display, performance, and charging specs
The OPPO Find X5 Pro doesn’t feel too bulky or large despite a 6.7″ 120Hz LTPO AMOLED display with QHD+ resolution. Powering the device is the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor coupled with 12GB RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage onboard.
There is a 5,000mAh battery onboard with 80W fast charging and 50W wireless charging support. The fully curved and sealed unibody design also results in IP68 dust and water resistance.
