A lot of the time, your phone’s camera can take photos that are perfect for social media. The thing is that they do a better job than dedicated social media cameras. This makes it inconvenient to use social media apps to take pictures. A lot of the time, people just use their default camera and just share to the app.

Pixel 6 owners can use Night Sight on Snapchat

Google announced this feature when it announced the feature drop last week. However, if you use a Pixel 6 phone, you won’t need to wait for it to use this feature. This came as a silent update to an app called Pixel Camera Services. This is the application that gives Snapchat access to other features on your camera. If you don’t know what Night Sight is, well you might want to get familiar with it especially if you snap in the dark a lot. What this mode does is take a long-exposure photo. The longer it takes the photo to capture, the brighter the image will be. This is useful for brightening up a scene. Now, the functionality has come to Snapchat. If you want to see if you got the update, just open up the app and look at the toolbar on the top right of the viewfinder. If you see a crescent moon-shaped icon, then you’ve gotten the update. When you have this mode enabled, you’ll be prompted to hold the camera still while you’re taking the photo.

How does it differ from the native app?

There are a few differences between the two implementations. For starters, the Google camera will automatically activate the Night Sight mode when it detects a dark scene, but not Snapchat. Also, Snapchat seems to expose for less time overall. How are the results? Well below, I put an example of a shot from both cameras. At first glance, the shot from the Snapchat camera seems more pleasing because it’s brighter overall. You can make out more details on the table’s texture, and the Joy-Cons are much brighter (they almost appear to glow). The Google camera photo seems a bit subdued compared to the Snapchat picture, and the texture on the table seems nonexistent. However, when you zoom into the pictures, you can see that the native picture has sharper details. It’s an overall clearer image.
