This chipset could be less powerful compared to the Exynos 1080, according to Ice Universe. We also learn that the Exynos 1280 may feature 5G connectivity. There’s no information on the CPU cores or the fabrication process at the moment. But we expect to learn more about this new chip in the coming weeks. As SamMobile notes, a bulk of Samsung phones and tablets run on Qualcomm or MediaTek chipsets. However, the company could be looking to change this by developing an entry-level chipset.
Samsung reportedly wants most of its 2022 devices to run on Exynos SoCs
Previous rumors have suggested that Samsung wants a majority of its 2022 devices to run on Exynos processors. The company is reportedly working on at least two high-end Exynos chipsets in addition to an entry-level and mid-range SoC. This could be Samsung’s reaction to the global chip shortage, which caused significant losses across the tech sector. The company even had to delay the arrival of phones like the Galaxy S21 FE due to the shortage. But Samsung can be better prepared if it develops budget and mid-range chipsets in-house. Samsung is significantly revamping its upcoming flagship chipset dubbed the Exynos 2200. This chip will likely arrive with the Galaxy S22 early next year. Built with the 4nm process, this chipset will reportedly sport a single Cortex-X2 CPU core accompanied by three Cortex-A710 cores and four Cortex-A510 CPU cores. On the GPU side of things, the Exynos 2200 will use the AMD Mobile Radeon GPU based on the RDNA2 architecture. This aspect has generated quite a bit of excitement among fans. But it’s worth pointing out that Samsung has supposedly encountered overheating issues with this chip. Early reports have suggested that Samsung could go back to using vapor chamber cooling for its upcoming flagship. Strangely, the Galaxy S21 lacks copper heat pipes or a vapor chamber. Teardowns show that the entry-level Galaxy S21 features a 3D graphite layer for heat dissipation instead.
