We all know about the upcoming Super Mario movie, as the cast for that movie was revealed several months ago. While this is a movie based on Nintendo properties, it’s being produced by a third-party studio, Illumination Entertainment.
But Nintendo bought its own animation studio for future projects
It looks like, even before the Super Mario movie is out, Nintendo is looking to dive into the world of cinema. The company recently announced that it had acquired an animation studio by the name of Dynamo Pictures. The founders established this Tokyo-based company back in March of 2011. On the document, the company lays out that it’s going to both plan and produce animations with a focus on CG animation. So, we can expect 3D animated shows from the company. The document is surprisingly short, and it gives us some more insight into the deal. For starters, Nintendo bought the entirety of the company, so it’s a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company. Not only did Nintendo buy the studio, but it’s changing its name to Nintendo Pictures Co. LTD (or Nintendo Pictures for short).
Don’t expect to see much stuff this year
Right now, the ink is still drying on the documents. So, don’t expect a new Super Mario or Legend of Zelda show next month. The deal itself won’t officially complete until October 3rd, 2022. While the company may very start working on some new content before then, it’s unlikely that we’ll see anything this year. In the document, it states that the acquisition will have “only a minor effect on Nintendo’s results for this fiscal year.” This means that the company isn’t really expecting there to be much of an impact. When these shows do eventually launch, we can expect them to be on streaming services like Netflix or Hulu. If Nintendo does cut a deal with Netflix, that might actually turn the company’s fortunes around, as it recently had to cut 300 jobs.
