For starters, the Sony IMX800 is a 1/1.49-inch sensor. It isn’t categorically compact, but we’ve seen bigger smartphone cameras in the past. For example, the Sony Xperia PRO-I features a 1-inch sensor while Samsung’s ISOCELL GN2 camera on the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is quite big too. So the Sony IMX800 isn’t among the big boys but it’s still bigger than the 1/1.56-inch sensor found on the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ flagships. While the latter two feature a 50-megapixel camera, the Sony IMX800 has an unusual resolution of 54-megapixels, or 8,768 x 6,144 pixels. The added pixels mean the pixel size is still 1.0µm despite a marginally bigger footprint. The sensor supports 4-to-1 pixel binning to increase the pixel size to 2.0µm and capture 13.5-megapixel or 12-megapixel resolution shots in low-light conditions. This is pretty much all we know about the Sony IMX800 so far. But we now have confirmation that it isn’t a 1-inch smartphone camera. Perhaps it isn’t among the “bigger” end of the spectrum. Having debuted inside the Honor 70 trio a day ago, we expect this camera to find its way into more camera-focused smartphones in the coming months.
The Honor 70 series has a lot more to offer
While cameras are one of the focal points of the Honor 70 series, the new Honor phones also have a lot more going for them. As you might expect, the Pro+ model is the star of the lineup. It is powered by MediaTek’s latest Dimensity 9000 processor with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The device also features a 10-bit OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It packs a 4,500mAh battery with 100W fast charging. The Honor 70 Pro downgrades to the Dimensity 8000 processor while the vanilla Honor 70 gets Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G+ chipset. The former keeps the Pro+’s display, cameras, and battery but the latter differs in more ways. You can find everything you need to know about the Honor 70 series here.
