For reference, that particular Pixel 3 sensor was Sony’s 12.2-megapixel IMX363. Which was also used in the Pixel 3XL. These details are according to a new report from 9To5Google. The report states that the APK of the latest Google Camera app contains files that suggest Google’s foldable pixel will be taking a step backwards in the camera department. The IMX363 sensor is believed to be the main camera sensor for the upcoming phone. Meanwhile, the report also suggests that the phone will come with two IMX355 sensors. Each of which would essentially be the front camera for selfies when the phone is in either the folded or unfolded state. Lastly, there will also likely be an IMX386 sensor on the back for the ultrawide camera.
The Pixel Fold will potentially release in 2022, but there’s no set date yet
Google was suspected to release its folding phone in 2021. Of course we know now that that isn’t going to be the case. But according to the report there are some references to the folding phone’s launch timeframe for next year. Specifically, there’s a reference labeled “isPixel2022Foldable.” Which would point to a Pixel device, that folds, with 2022 being the launch year. Google has referenced past Pixel phone release dates in the same way, including with the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a series. Using references like “isPixel2019” and “isPixel2019MidRange” respectively. This isn’t a guarantee that 2022 will be the year Google unleashes its foldable onto the world. But it seems like a fairly good indicator, considering the circumstances. In addition to these new details, the Pixel Fold, or whatever it’s going to be officially called, has recently been presented in the form of concept renders. Another more recent rumor suggested that the device could use the same camera setup as the Pixel 6 Pro. Though it seems that may not actually be the case.
