OnePlus is definitely a champ when it comes to charging speeds. It developed technology that confines the heat to the charging brick and not the phone itself. Because of this, it’s able to push more watts to the phone without causing it to, you know, explode. While some companies are trying to push chargers with wattage north of 100w, 80w is still nothing to sneeze at.
US OnePlus 10 Pro units are limited to 65W charging
The OnePlus 10 Pro is soon to make it to other markets. Its price in Europe was just leaked, and it shows a 2.2% decrease from last year’s OnePlus 9 Pro. So, we have an idea of how much this phone is going to cost when it makes it to the States. While we don’t know exactly how much it’s going to cost in the United States, we know how fast it’s going to charge. According to 9To5Google, the OnePlus 10 Pro will ship with a 65W charger in the box in the United States. That’s going to be disappointing to some people, as the Chinese version of the phone comes with an 80W charger.
OnePlus explains why
Instead of getting the latest and greatest, American users will get the same 65W charger that came with the OnePlus 9 Pro and the OnePlus 8T. The question is “why?”. Well, in a forum post, OnePlus explains why it didn’t give American users the extra 15w of power. US users are getting 65W charging because “…80W SUPERVOOC does not currently support 110 or 120-volt AC power – the typical standard for power outlets in the region.” So, the American outlets aren’t compatible with the 80W charging brick. It’s good that OnePlus did provide a prompt and reasonable answer. It could have easily brushed off the issue. The incompatibility between outlets and the charging brick makes sense.
Does it really make a difference?
So, folks in the United States are getting a 23% decrease in wattage. Does that mean that the phones will charge 23% slower? Not necessarily. With the 80W charger, it can top off the OnePlus 10 Pro in about 32 minutes. However, OnePlus explains that using the 65W charger, you can fill the phone from 1% to 100% in 34 minutes. The main difference in charging speeds isn’t really in the final charging time. With the 65W charger, you just won’t get as much of an initial boost while charging. So, plugging in your charger for 10 minutes will afford you a bigger boost with the 80W charger than with the 65W charger.
