Google does not want to stop scanning your heart

Keeping up with your heart health is important, and this is why people tend to keep their heart rate monitors on. This is also great if you want to have quick access to your heart rate and avoid waiting for it to activate and take its measurements. However, there are people who don’t want this sensor firing 24/7. There’s no point in having it scan your heartbeat if you’re just sitting reading a book or if you’re at work. Sure, it works in the background and doesn’t interfere with the interface, but the main issue is battery life. Google touted that this watch will give you 24 hours of battery life on a single charge. That heavily depends on your usage, but in our testing, we found that that was not the case. If you’re not the person who wants to keep a constant eye on your heart rate, you’d want to disable it or tone it down. However, digging into the settings, the folks at 9To5Google were not able to find the option to turn it off. That can be rather annoying. This may not come as much of a surprise given the Fitbit integration. As you know, the Pixel Watch is deeply integrated with Fitbit’s suite of health-related features. This is important because Fitbit removed the ability to disable the sensor for its watches back in 2020. Hopefully, Google will let you disable the heart rate sensor on the Pixel Watch, but it doesn’t seem likely. If Fitbit was able to get away with this for two years, we’re not sure there’s much pressure for Google to change course. If you have a Pixel Watch, just know that battery life may be impacted by the constant heart rate sensing. However, there are other means of saving battery life on this watch.
